Taxes & Death More Certain Than Taxes & Patriotism

If you’re anything like me, you have way too many windows open on your computer desktop.  You have too many tabs open in your browser.  Every once in a while when you see that you have 5 active word documents, you may decide to have a look and remind yourself what they actually ARE.  I did that tonight and saw an unsaved document containing a few notes that I took during the VP Debate:

  1. Ultimate bridge to nowhere (Biden on McCain’s plan to give Americans $5K for health insurance purchases)
  2. Taxing people making $250K (not $42K)
  3. Paying taxes is not patriotism (Palin)

Ok, so that’s as far as I got, but I do think Biden’s “ultimate bridge to nowhere” comment is worth an entire post.  Well, so is the inaccuracy regarding Obama’s tax structure.  Right now Palin’s statement that paying taxes is not patriotism is stinging me.  Supporting your country and the people who live here isn’t patriotic?  I myself don’t make much more than $42,000 – and it’s not enough to support my family or pay off my debts – but I do think it’s my patriotic duty to pay taxes.    Or maybe it’s not patriotic – it’s more basic than that.  It’s my obligation.  I get to live in the United States.  If I want to continue to live here and reap the benefits, I need to give back to society in the way that has been deemed appropriate in this republic.

I wanted to be sure that Palin said something to the effect of “paying taxes is not patriotism,” so I searched on google for /Palin “paying taxes” “not patriotic”/.  I was surprised by the number and variety of hits.  Click here to see what I saw.  Ha!  Someone claiming to be an “American Thinker” has the line “Liberal sewer rats don’t get to decide what is or is not patriotic.”  I’m almost afraid to click the link and see what’s that about.
